The 12 Zodiac Signs and Their Dates: Everything You Need To Know

All 12 zodiac signs, their exact date ranges, ruling planets, elements, and what makes each one distinct.

The 12 Zodiac Signs in Order

The zodiac is a 360-degree band of sky divided into 12 equal sections, each named after a constellation. As Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun appears to move through each of these sections over the course of a year. The sign the Sun occupied on the day you were born is your Sun sign — the one most people know as their "zodiac sign."

The 12 signs follow a fixed sequence starting with Aries in late March and ending with Pisces in late February. Each sign has a ruling planet, an element (fire, earth, air, or water), a modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable), and a distinct set of personality themes.

Aries — March 21 to April 19

Element: Fire. Ruler: Mars. Modality: Cardinal. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac — the initiator, the pioneer, the sign that acts before it thinks. Aries energy is bold, competitive, and instinctive. At its best: courageous and decisive. At its shadow: impulsive and quick to anger. Aries rules the head.
